Swiss Chocolate

‘Schweizer Schokolade, Alpen, Milch und Pioniere’ is the new standard work on the subject, a finely produced illustrated book that joins food, business and cultural history. Public History Research searched far beyond Switzerland for its historical imagery.

In ‘Schweizer Schokolade – Alpen, Milch und Pioniere’, the food researcher Dominik Flammer describes how a country became one of the leading chocolate nations without growing cocoa, without colonies and without access to the sea. He tells two stories at once, the story of Swiss invention and the story of the myth that clever marketing built on it.
The Süddeutsche Zeitung summed up its power neatly: “Hardly any advertising myth is as potent today as that of Swiss chocolate.” (Nicolas Freund, 14 November 2025, our translation)

Visual history and the images in the book

The myth lives above all in the images, and it was Public History Research that sought them out and selected them for the book. The search led far beyond Switzerland, into museums, archives and art collections in London, France and Italy, and into private Swiss collections whose holdings appear here for the first time.
