H.Schwarzenbach - The Zurich Cook Book

In homage to Zurich’s longstanding purveyor of fine foods, Public History Food created a culinary narrative that explores 150 years of history and passion.

Five generations of specialty goods

From the heart of Zurich’s historic Oberdorf district, H. Schwarzenbach has been purveying fine goods and spices from around the world since 1864. Now in its fifth generation, the family-run specialty shop on Münstergasse is a culinary institution, synonymous with quality, heritage, and taste.

To celebrate its 150th anniversary, Heini Schwarzenbach commissioned Public History Food to create an illustrated book that captures the history of the culinary landmark.

More than a chronicle of a family business, the book traces Schwarzenbach’s history and legacy in shaping Zurich’s food culture, featuring stories, archival images, and recipes from renowned local chefs, a master chocolatier, and a traditional confectioner, all inspired by Schwarzenbach’s exceptional ingredients. It’s the story of how flavour, tradition, and family have shaped one of Switzerland’s most iconic culinary destinations.

The book is a bestseller in Switzerland, with several thousand copies sold to date. Public History Food continues to collaborate and consult with Schwarzenbach to introduce new products from the Alpine region to the Swiss market.
