Dinkelreis und Pfefferchirsi

This elaborately designed publication tells the food history and culinary wealth of Basel-City and Basel-Country. It won the Grand Prix du Livre Gastronomique.

The book is a voyage of discovery through the food history of the two Basels. It ranges from ancient grains such as spelt and einkorn to rediscovered vegetables, chard, peas, parsnips and broad beans, and on to a wealth of baking traditions, from the Fastenwähe to the Liestal Uffertsweggen.

The farmer with the camera

The historical images tell part of this story too. Our research took us to the Kunstmuseum Basel, to Museum.BL in Liestal and to the Historisches Museum Basel. The standout find came from a private collection, a series of large-format, staged black-and-white photographs. A farmer had taken them in the early twentieth century, with his own family posed at harvest.
