As head of department, we led an international team of specialists, with our own budget and schedule. Our visual research into the 14th century underpinned the artistic designs. We studied paintings and prints from the years of the plague, together with architectural drawings and views of the landscape. On that basis we sourced the key set pieces from the film industry’s specialists in London, Rome and Prague.
